Windom man sentenced to prison for knife assault
(Windom, MN) – A Windom man will serve time in prison for assaulting his brother-in-law with a knife and choking his sister during an argument.
Jared Lee Hansen, 42, was convicted of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon Wednesday in Cottonwood County Court. As part of a Norgaard Plea deal, a second charge of domestic assault by strangulation was dismissed.
A defendant acknowledges with a Norgaard Plea that the state has enough evidence to convict him of a crime, but he cannot recall the circumstances of the event.
Hansen was sentenced to 34 months in the St. Cloud Correctional Facility, with credit for 125 days already served, giving him just under 2 1/2 years left to serve.
Documents filed in Cottonwood County Court in February say Hansen and his brother-in-law were drinking vodka when an argument over a court case ensued. Hansen kicked his brother-in-law in the face and punched him multiple times, then cut his neck with a knife. Hansen choked his sister when she tried to break up the fight.
Hansen has a previous conviction of assault from a 1999 case. He’s been convicted of a multitude of crimes over the last 20 years, including felony criminal vehicular injury, theft, and first-degree DWI.
