Suspected sculpture vandal charged with felony
(Mankato, MN) – A woman who told police she damaged a statue in downtown Mankato has been charged with a felony.
Kaitlyn Anna Erdmann, 23, of Mankato, was charged in Blue Earth County Court with first-degree damage to property,
On May 17th, police sent photos to the media of two women they believed had taken the baby portion of “Standing Mother with Baby” statue that was displayed on Front Street for the CityArt Walking Sculpture Tour. The damage to the piece was irreparable.
Within hours, police said they had identified their suspects.
According to the criminal complaint, an anonymous tipster first contacted police and identified the suspects and provided information about their place of employment. Court documents say that Erdmann then called police to admit that she’d climbed on the statue to take a photo when it broke.
Erdmann admitted to being downtown drinking before the incident and offered to return the broken piece of statue.
