North Mankato man who initiated police standoff convicted of misdemeanor

(North Mankato, MN) – A North Mankato man who initiated a standoff with police after he reportedly pulled a gun on two children has been convicted of a misdemeanor.

Scott Douglas Johnston, 60, was initially charged last August with two felony counts of 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and felony terroristic threats.

In a plea deal signed on April 30th, Johnston agreed to enter a guilty plea to an amended count of misdemeanor disorderly conduct in exchange for dismissal of the rest of the charges. “I raised my voice to some neighbor children. The children became alarmed,” states the petition in a section detailing acts Johnston admitted to committing on August 10, 2018.

Nicollet County Court Judge Todd Westphal sentenced Johnston to 15 days in the Nicollet County Jail with 12 days stayed for a period of 1 year. Johnston will receive credit for 3 days already served. He must also complete 1 year of unsupervised probation.

In August 2018, North Mankato police received a report that Johnston had threatened an 8-year-old and a 9-year-old with a gun. Police secured a parameter around Johnston’s home for nearly four hours before he emerged and was arrested. A tactical response team was called to assist with his arrest.
