Minnesota woman pleads guilty in death of foster child
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Brooklyn Park woman has pleaded guilty in the death of her gravely malnourished foster daughter.
Thirty-four-year-old Sherrie Dirk pleaded guilty Friday to second-degree unintentional murder in the death of the 3-year-old girl.
The Hennepin County Attorney’s office says Dirk admitted to aggravating factors, including that the child was particularly vulnerable due to her age. Those admissions will allow the judge to give her a longer sentence than state guidelines recommend.
Dirk and her husband, 33-year-old Bryce Dirk, were originally indicted on charges of first- and second-degree murder. The Star Tribune reports Bryce Dirk pleaded guilty last month to second-degree murder.
Prosecutors say Sherrie Dirk had “completely immobilized” the girl on Nov. 6, 2017, by binding her with sheets and leaving her in a room with the door closed.
