(Mankato, MN) – Minnesota added 3,800 jobs during January, but the state’s unemployment rate increased, according to figures released by the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.

DEED says the state unemployment rate increased to 3 percent in January, compared to the national rate of 4.0 percent.

Over the year, Minnesota added 7,803 jobs since last January, the lowest over-the-year job gain since regaining positive growth following the recession.

“Minnesota has started the year on a positive note with 3,800 new jobs,” said DEED Commissioner Steve Grove.  “However, with revisions, we continue to see job growth slowing across the state as our labor force continues to tighten.”

Leading all sectors in growth with 2,200 new jobs in January was leisure and hospitality.  Trade, transportation and utilities came in second with 1,400 jobs, which financial activities was third, up by 1,200.

Top job losses came in education and healthcare, which suffered the loss of 1,500 jobs.
