Franklin men who capsized on Big Kandiyohi Lake identified
Two men who swam a mile to safety after their sailboat capsized on Big Kandiyohi Lake have been identified.
Duane Smith, 48, and 51-year-old James Lund, both from Franklin, had been sleeping aboard the boat on the lake at about 1:23 Sunday morning when a thunder and wind storm moved through the area, tipping the boat over.
The two men went into the water and were separated.
Smith swam about a mile to shore and summoned help from Lund’s brother. They called 911 and went out on the lake on a pontoon boat to search for Lund but it turns out he also swam about a mile to shore and sought help.
Lund was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Smith wasn’t hurt.
